The cut-through traffic flowing through Southern Shores from South Dogwood Trail to East Dogwood Trail to Hickory Trail has been continuous for hours now, with nary a driver stopping at the stop sign at the East Dogwood-Hickory intersection. I could not walk my dog because he was terrified by the unceasing onslaught of vehicles.

Please let me know what has been happening, and still is happening, on the roads north of Hickory Trail. With the volume of traffic I am seeing, there must be long backups.

The cut-through traffic today is reminiscent of traffic we usually see later in June after the kids are out of school. I am seeing plenty of young children in the vehicles passing through.

It would be encouraging to see a police vehicle somewhere near the East Dogwood-Hickory intersection to remind drivers that “STOP” does not mean run the sign.

UPDATE AT 7 p.m. SUBMITTED BY A BEACON READER: “At this time, WAZE shows traffic backed up on Hillcrest by the hill near the tennis court to the Hillcrest/Sea Oats stop signs and again on Sea Oats from 11th to Rte. 12. Rte. 12 is backed up from Chichahauk north to Duck.”

Please read the other comments that came in from readers after 7 p.m. Clearly, we experienced a lot of gridlock yesterday in the residential areas from the afternoon until darkness.

  1. I drove up South Dogwood around 6-6.15 and noticed the extraordinary amount of traffic.
    When I got to the main road, there was NO BACKED UP TRAFFIC on the Main Lanes
    but the incoming cars were heavily backed up on the turning lane, well past the entry to that.
    So Duck traffic probably got backed up at Hillcrest and Sea Oats
    when it would have been faster for them to go by the main, usual route!
    I wondered whether there could be some radio info. as to traffic conditions.
    Perhaps with a highway sign directing them to a traffic channel.
    I think this is what the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel signs carry ?

  2. Even through 8 PM they were cutting through onto Sea Oats to Duck Rd light. Hard to walk our dogs up here too, even after 7. People are coming down to vacation after being stuck at home for 2 months, and those who have to cancel because of family sickness, are quickly getting rented. Schools have been closed since March so families can rent in early June, when they couldn’t in the past. PSAs are reminding people to stay safe, distance themselves when outside. It’s going to be a busy summer, and we all have to be mindful and stay safe.

  6. My question is where are the police. I live on South Dogwood Trail and never see a police car patrolling or heaven forbid stopping someone for speeding or running a stop sign. Some of the cars passing by my house are easily doing 35 to 40 mph. Everyone knows that the “no left turn” worked great and why it is expected to cost over $6000.00 per weekend for the police to enforce it is beyond me. All winter long we see 2 or 3 police cars sitting at the school for hours. The only thing more pathetic than our police department is our mayor and some members of our town council. I have lived in Southern Shores for 45 years and have never seen such a mess. Dogwood trail is falling apart with pot holes and now the new sidewalk curbing gives you no room to move over when someone wants to take up more than their share of the road.

    I applaud the sidewalk project and have seen a lot of people using it. I do however think the curbing causes a problem on a road that is first of all not wide enough and was never intended for the amount of traffic traveling through on the weekends. Something needs to be done to protect and preserve the life style we all use to enjoy living in Southern Shores.

    1. Thank you for your comments, Grady. The new curbing incident to the sidewalk bewilders me. I would like an explanation as to why it was installed in places where the sidewalk is not adjacent to the road–i.e., without any intervening green space–because it clearly narrows the road.
